So, as a founder of 3 Shopify apps, each one more awesome than the other, I can definitely say that this is a complicated platform to create an app for...

However, at the same time, the more complicated it is, the more rewarding. So keep that in mind as motivation.

Building a Shopify app breaks down to 4 main steps.

1. Build an MVP and Launch Fast

This part is the beginning of your journey.

Since there isn’t much analytics about the Shopify App Store, the biggest favor you can do for yourself is to launch as fast as you can and start collecting your own data.

You simply can’t know:

  • Keyword volume
  • Competition
  • Ranking
  • How many people will see your listing
  • How many will actually install

So just launch.

Don’t overthink it.
Don’t try to make it perfect.
Just get something out.

2. Testing and Scaling (Yes, Scaling Comes Early)

You’d think scaling comes later, but with Shopify, scaling means you are on the right track.

Scaling is not the result.
Scaling is the signal.

Don’t get stuck thinking about perfect features or perfect UI yet. First, make sure people are actually finding your app.

Shopify is the best example of a snowball effect. The more installs, traffic, and reviews you get, the faster you grow.

How to Test Your App Listing

You launched the app. Now you need to test it.

Your listing is probably not hitting the right audience yet.

A really nice thing about Shopify is that the second you change your listing, it updates immediately. So you can actually test things pretty fast.

Try a different listing every single day.
Play with it for a few days until you find one that gets you 2–3 installs instead of 0–1.

How to Start Scaling

The Built for Shopify badge helps A LOT. Don’t focus on it yet, but keep it in the back of your mind.

The most important thing in the Shopify App Store is reviews.

Get Your First Reviews Fast

GET YOUR FIRST 3 REVIEWS ASAP.

If you don’t know Shopify store owners:

  • Post in communities and offer your app for free in exchange for feedback
  • Send a personal email to every installer
  • Follow up after 3 days (this is when they actually respond)
  • Email random stores, but don’t just talk. Show them your solution on their store

Even without a budget:

  • Run cheap Shopify Ads just for data
  • Use Reddit Ads to get early traction

Give it time. Growth is slow at the start.

Once you hit 3–5 installs per day, you’re moving.

3. Polishing, Retention, and Conversion

Now it’s time to actually improve the app.

You’re no longer guessing. You have:

  • Feedback
  • Feature requests
  • A sense of your market

You now understand:

  • Where you stand
  • Who your competitors are
  • What users actually want
  • What users are searching for

Build an Onboarding Flow

Create a simple onboarding email sequence:

  • Welcome email
  • How to use the app
  • Simple tips
  • Value-focused guidance

Send 3–4 emails in the first week.

Shift Your Mindset

Stop thinking:
“Please give me a review”

Start thinking:
“How do I make this user actually get value”

Start Testing Monetization

Now it’s time to make money.

Test:

  • Discounts
  • Free trials
  • Pricing
  • Buttons
  • App flow

But don’t forget retention.

You don’t want users to convert only in the first 48 hours.
You want them to stay and maybe convert next month too.

Use Real Analytics (Stop Guessing)

At this stage, guessing is not enough.

Use analytics tools and track:

  • Where users drop
  • What features they use
  • What leads to conversion

This is how you actually improve instead of just guessing.

4. Monetization and Real Growth

By this point, if you did things right, you either have the Built for Shopify badge or you’re close.

And now you have:

  • Budget
  • Data
  • Traffic
  • Motivation

Now it’s time to grow for real.

Target Bigger Stores

Go after Shopify Plus stores. These are the real gems.

Run Paid Ads (Even If They’re Expensive)

Shopify Ads are expensive.

But think about it:
Users are already inside the App Store.
They are literally there to find an app.

High intent = worth it.

The Most Important Tip (Seriously)

Before you even think about launching your app:

Install live support inside your app.

If you don’t have live support, you are losing users every single day.

This is how you:

  • Get feedback
  • Fix issues fast
  • Build trust
  • Turn users into paying customers

Conclusion: This Is What It Actually Feels Like

Building a Shopify app is not easy.

At the start, it feels like nothing is working:

  • 0 installs
  • No reviews
  • No feedback

But then slowly:

  • 1 becomes 3
  • 3 becomes 5
  • 5 becomes 10

That’s how it works.

Focus on:

  • Launching fast
  • Testing your listing
  • Getting your first reviews
  • Talking to your users

And most importantly:

Keep going even when it feels like it’s not working.

Because in Shopify, that’s usually exactly when things start to click.
